Atlanta Family Photographer Guide: What to Wear for Photos

One of the most common questions I get before a session is what to wear. The short answer is simple. Coordinate, do not match.

The goal is not to look identical. It is to look like you belong together without anything feeling forced or distracting. When outfits are chosen well, they blend into the overall feel of the photos and let the connection between you stand out.

Start with One Outfit and Build Around It

A good place to start is with one piece you love. This is often a dress for mom or a main outfit for one family member.

If that piece has a pattern or print, pull colors from it for everyone else. For example, if a dress includes soft blues, creams, and muted greens, the rest of the family can wear solid tones that complement those colors.

This keeps everything cohesive without looking overly styled.

Coordinate Colors, Do Not Match Exactly

Avoid putting everyone in the exact same color. Instead, aim for a palette of three to five tones that work well together.

Soft neutrals, earth tones, and muted colors tend to photograph best. Think creams, tans, soft blues, warm browns, and subtle greens.

When everyone is slightly different but still within the same palette, the result feels natural and effortless.

Keep Patterns Simple

Patterns can work, but it is best to keep them minimal.

One patterned piece is usually enough. Too many competing prints can feel busy and distracting in photos.

Avoid large logos, bold graphics, or anything that pulls attention away from faces and connection.

Dress for the Season and Location in Atlanta

In Atlanta, this matters more than people think.

Spring and summer bring a lot of green, so wearing too much green can cause you to blend into the background. Instead, go for lighter neutrals or soft contrasting tones.

Fall works well with warmer colors like rust, beige, soft browns, and muted oranges. Winter sessions often look great with creams, layers, and simple textures.

If your session is at home, think about your space. Neutral tones that complement your decor will always feel more cohesive than something that clashes with your surroundings.

If you are planning an in home session, you can see how these tones come together here.

Choose Comfortable, Easy to Move Clothing

This is especially important for families with toddlers.

If kids are uncomfortable, it shows. Choose pieces they can move in, sit in, and play in easily.

Flowy dresses, soft fabrics, and layers tend to photograph beautifully while still feeling comfortable.

If you are preparing for a session with younger kids, this guide may also help.

What to Wear for Maternity Sessions

For maternity sessions, the goal is to highlight your shape.

Fitted dresses or tops that hug the belly work really well. They naturally show the bump without needing to pose heavily.

Flowy dresses are also a great option. They create movement and a softer, more relaxed feel in photos.

What to Wear for Lifestyle Newborn Sessions

For in home newborn sessions, simple is always best.

Neutral onesies and soft swaddles photograph beautifully and make it easy to change looks without fully changing the baby.

This keeps things calm and low stress, which makes a big difference during a newborn session.

For parents, stick with soft, neutral tones that work well with your home. Creams, light grays, and warm neutrals tend to photograph best in natural light.

A Few Final Tips

Lay everything out together ahead of time to make sure it flows.

Avoid last minute outfit decisions.

Barefoot or simple shoes usually photograph better than athletic sneakers.

Most importantly, do not overthink it. The goal is not perfection. It is to feel comfortable and like yourselves.
